LUMBERTON The Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair offers even the smallest of fair-goers the chance to take home a prize.
The 35th annual Diaper Derby will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the fairgrounds. Toddlers between the ages of 6 months and 1 year who are not yet walking, can crawl their way to a chance at a first-place prize of $100.
Ive been really surprised to see how many babies are in the Diaper Derby, said Robeson County Commissioner Tom Taylor. I like watching the parents better than I do the kids trying to get across the finish line. The parents, and grandparents get involved in it, too. Its been real successful and the crowd really gets into it.
The first winner of the Diaper Derby was Chip Bullard, son of fair board member Herbert Bullard.
This is the longest running event at the fair, besides the fair itself, said Buddy Britt, the coordinator of the event.
For information about the Diaper Derby, contact Britt at (910) 738-7004 or visit www.robesoncountyfair.com and print out a registration form.
Competition is open to residents of Robeson and surrounding counties.
The second annual youth steak cook-off will be held later that day as part of the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair.
The event is open to ages 13 to 19. The youth will have one hour to set-up their own gas grill and any table decorations. One 10 ounce steak will be supplied. Pre-registration to the first fifteen is required and no late registrations will be accepted. Judging will be based on safety, food handling, taste and seasoning, overall appearance and attractiveness. The first place winner receives $100, second receives $75; and third receives $50.
Registration forms are available at the Robeson County Cooperative Extension Office in the O.P. Owens Building at 455 Caton Road or the Public Schools of Robeson County. For information, call (910) 671-3276.
