Festival Dance Returns
By: Published by the Robesonian
After a years absence the annual Fairmont Farmers Festival dance returns to a new location and starring a very popular beach music band. The site of the dance for the 26th annual Farmers Festival is the Robeson County Fair Grounds Exhibition Hall with the music being provided by The Carolina Breakers. Festival Chairman Carey Pittman and I met with fair officials in December to discuss the use of their facility which provides an excellent venue for a large dance as well as offering outstanding rest rooms, a spacious and well lit parking lot, and an easily known location.
Fair officials Allen Faircloth and Maurice Leggett were more than accommodating in the making of the arrangements for the dance. Soon after the dance venue was booked a contract was signed with The Carolina Breakers who are a very well known beach music band and were awarded the honor of being the best new beach music band at ceremonies held recently in Myrtle Beach. Local music notable and Robeson County native Jerry Shooter sings with this band and has performed locally with other bands as well.
To spice up an already exciting event the dance, slated for 9 p.m. to midnight on Saturday October 20th, will also feature an open “shagging” contest during the evening with cash prizes being awarded to the winners. Plans call for heavy radio advertising on local beach and oldies stations with free ticket giveaways, internet promos, and email notifications. The dance will cap off a huge day of festival fun and excitement which will feature a 100 unit parade, car show, arts and crafts, food, children’s amusements, and four hours of afternoon entertainment at the FDC Pavilion in the Pines at Community Park.
The first meeting of the Farmers Festival Committee will be on Monday at 7 p.m. in the town hall courtroom when 14 members will begin making plans for the festival. Pittman was named Chairman in November by me and succeeds former Chair Jan Tedder-Rogers.
